A chemical peel is done to re-texture the skin on the face through removing any outer layers that are damaged with the use of a chemical solution. People who have wrinkles, facial blemishes and uneven skin pigmentation can be helped by this procedure, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. There are different types of chemical peels, so when considering this procedure, ensure none of the contraindications of chemical peels applies to you. (SEE BELOW FOR CONTRAINDICATIONS)
Glycolic Acid Peel (great for all skin types)
Glycolic acid is a gentle AHA acid that works by dissolving the bonds between skin cells. Because it works differently from other chemical peeling agents, it has almost no side effects and requires very little downtime. It's one of the mildest skin peels available.Great for all skin types, whether young, mature, dry, or sensitive. Provides a gentle exfoliation that fades fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, sun damage and acne scars.. It's the perfect choice for those who want a skin peel with little to no discomfort, side effects or downtime.
Salicylic Acid Peel (Best for oily skin types)
Salicylic acid is a gentle BHA derived from willow bark. It's long been used to treat skin conditions like acne. As a skin peel, salicylic acid can reverse the effects of aging, wiping away fine lines, wrinkles and blemishes. Salicylic acid clears pores to treat acne, and reduces oil production to stop acne from recurring. The Salicylic Peel is great for those seeking to rid themselves of chronic or recurrent acne, and enjoy clear, firm, brilliantly youthful skin.
Lactic Acid Peel (This is a Deeper Peel and best for darker skin tones)
Lactic acid is an AHA derived from milk. It's frequently used, alone or in combination with other AHAs, for light and medium skin peels. It's gentle enough to make a great maintenance peel for those who wish to extend the results of a deeper peel. It can help young users stave off the onset of age spots, sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles. Lactic acid is an alternative choice for those whose skin has become too accustomed to other peeling agents, even other AHAs. Women who wish to continue their normal skin care routine during pregnancy can use lactic acid peels. Because lactic acid is so gentle, it's one of the best chemical peel choices for dark skin.
Did you know?: Cleopatra bathed in goat milk to clear her skin. The Queen of Egypt had the right idea; milk contains lactic acid, a type of AHA acid.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: DO NOT GET AHA PEELS IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
• Sunburn skin
• Inflammations (Rosacea)
• Heightened allergies
• Open wounds
• Medications that can cause skin sensitivity (for example keratolytics such as Retin-A, Retinol, adapalene, Accutane, azelaic acid, alphahydroxy acid or salicylic acid)
People with couperous, acneic skin with pustules and papules, very thin skin or skin with visible capillaries should exfoliate with gentle peels and never use harsh exfoliators.
Pregnancy
Pregnant women should avoid getting a chemical peel. Women who are lactating should also avoid getting a chemical peel. Salicylic acid is a chemical used in some chemical peels and it can be harmful to the pregnancy as well as to the unborn child. This chemical has been shown to cause various pregnancy complications and birth defects when taken orally in large amounts, according to the website Baby Center. Having a strong body or face peel containing this chemical can result in the salicylic acid soaking into the skin; results are similar to consuming at least one or more aspirin during pregnancy, according to Baby Center.
Active Herpes Lesions
Active herpes lesions are the lesions present when a herpes outbreak is occurring. Herpes is a a virus that is incurable, but controllable with antiviral medications for most patients. The lesions can appear on the mouth, vagina, anus, penis, urethra or cervix. A chemical peel can cause herpetic activation, according to The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
